The trouble with shin splints

First week of training over and I’m feeling really motivated, and dare I say it excited for the challenge ahead.

Don’t get me wrong this week certainly hasn’t been easy and I could have very easily allowed other things to take over, however I’ve been really motivated by simply getting myself out there this week, it’s like I’ve caught the bug again.

I’ve had to take it easy as I’ve had pain in my legs resembling shin splints following each run that’s been more uncomfortable than severe, and not wanting to push myself too early in the game I’ve allowed that to subside before heading out again so have only managed 2 runs this week. Something I’ll need to keep an eye on over the next few weeks to ensure it doesn’t get worse, and some strength exercises for my muscles, and some regular gentle yoga sessions will help prepare my legs and body for more runs and the task ahead.

My Calvin Harris playlist has been my soundtrack of choice this week, I love music with a beat when I run, especially dance music as I find it energises me, and depending on the tunes that come up on the playlist can even inspire me to keep running for a little bit longer.

I’m incredibly lucky to live in Blackheath and have the common and Greenwich Park on my doorstep, and this morning the village resembled Piccadilly Circus with the sheer number of joggers and cyclists out getting their Sunday Morning fix. That in itself is inspiring enough.

From a diet perspective I’m drinking more water to prepare my body for the increased level of activity, I’m increasing my protein levels for nutritional support too, natural yoghurt, seeds and nuts and replaced pasta and rice with wholemeal varieties. Everything in preparation.

All in all it’s been a good week and I’m off to a good start. I’ll be back next week with the next instalment on my progress.

Don’t forget, I’m raising vital funds for Meeting Needs, every donation will be hugely appreciated and and you can visit my fundraising page at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/helenmoonrpfhm201811964 .
