It’s a challenging time for a lot of people at the moment, not just those in events, and if you are not used to working from home, then the prospect of potentially having to do so could cause you anxiety and worry, so here are our top tips for making it as stress free as possible.
Create a dedicated work space
Dedicate a desk space and some peripherals only for work use. For example, when your laptop is hooked up to a monitor and external keyboard, it’s work time. When it’s on your lap, that’s personal time.
Create a morning routine
This can be making a cup of coffee, returning home after a jog or run, getting dressed into clothes (avoiding pyjamas), create a morning routine that ends with you starting work.
Maintain regular hours
And stick to them. It can be far too easy to carry on working when you work from home. Set an alarm if you need to remind yourself that the working part of your day has come to an end.
Take regular breaks
A general rule of thumb should be a 5 minute break every hour if you work on a laptop or PC, so work for 50-55 minutes then get up and stretch your legs, take a bathroom break or grab a glass of water.
Don’t forget to take your lunch
In its entirety. The same as you would if you were in the office. Your lunch break is the most important break of the day so don’t short change yourself on taking that time. Take advantage of the fact you are at home and prepare yourself something really healthy and nutritious.
Set up regular team calls and make your voice heard
Regular team catch ups can help to prevent feelings of isolation. You can do this via Microsoft Teams or Slack. Be sure to speak up during the meeting so everyone knows you’re on the call. A simple “Hello everyone” at the start and “Thanks, everyone!” at the close of a meeting will go a long way towards making your presence known.
Working remotely requires you to over communicate. When you finish a project or important task, say so. Over-communicating doesn’t necessarily mean you have to write a five page essay to explain your every move, but it does mean repeating yourself.
Create an end of the day routine
The same as you started your day, end your day in the same way. You might have a simple routine such as tidying up your work space and shutting down your computer. Maybe you can turn on a favourite podcast or listen to some music. Whatever you choose, do it consistently to mark the end of working hours.
