EventWell are here to provide event planners and organisers with valuable event design tips, and this week we would like to share advice on designing event registration forms that are inclusive and accessible for neurodivergent attendees.
By considering their unique needs and preferences, you can create a more welcoming and inclusive registration process for all attendees.
Here are our top 10 tips:
1️⃣ Keep it Simple:
Simplify the registration form by using clear and concise language. Avoid complex or ambiguous questions that may cause confusion or anxiety. Use plain language and provide clear instructions to ensure ease of understanding.
2️⃣ Provide Clear Formatting:
Use a clean and organised layout for the registration form. Clearly label each section and use headings, bullet points, or numbered lists, and consider background colour, font type and text alignment to make it easier to navigate. This all helps neurodivergent individuals process information more efficiently.
3️⃣ Use Visual Cues:
Incorporate visual cues, such as icons or symbols, to aid comprehension. Visual cues can help individuals with neurodivergent traits process information more easily and quickly.
4️⃣ Offer Multiple Registration Options:
Provide different registration methods to accommodate individual preferences. Some neurodivergent individuals may prefer online forms, while others may prefer paper-based options. Offering flexibility ensures that everyone can register in a way that suits them best.
5️⃣ Allow Time for Completion:
Neurodivergent individuals may require additional time to process information and respond to questions. Consider extending the registration deadline or providing an option for requesting additional time if needed.
6️⃣ Provide Clear Instructions:
Clearly explain each question or field on the registration form. If certain information is required, indicate it explicitly. This helps neurodivergent individuals understand what is expected and reduces anxiety or uncertainty.
7️⃣ Offer Optional Questions:
Include optional questions on the registration form to respect privacy and individual comfort levels. Some neurodivergent individuals may prefer not to disclose certain personal information, and providing optional fields allows for greater inclusivity.
8️⃣ Allow for Accommodations:
Include a section on the registration form where you detail all of the accommodations your event will offer and individuals can request any additional accommodations or specify any specific needs they may have. This allows you to better support neurodivergent attendees during the event. Do not simple rely on asking the questions, unless you attempt to create a foundation of psychological safety disclosure is unlikely to happen.
9️⃣ Provide Contact Information:
Include contact information on the registration form for individuals who may have questions or require assistance. This ensures that neurodivergent individuals feel supported and can easily seek clarification or guidance.
🔟 Test and Seek Feedback:
Before finalising the registration form, test it with a diverse group of individuals, including neurodivergent individuals. Gather feedback on its clarity, ease of use, and accessibility. This helps identify any areas for improvement and ensures a more inclusive registration process.
Remember, designing an inclusive event registration form involves considering the diverse needs and preferences of neurodivergent individuals. By implementing these tips, you can create a more accessible and welcoming registration experience for all attendees.
Let’s make event registration more inclusive for everyone! Because we are all neurodiverse!
