My Half-Marathon challenge for Meeting Needs

That first step is always the hardest, but once you make it the rest of the challenge will be achievable just as long as you can keep your mojo going.

I’ve been promising myself that I would go out for a run for a few weeks now (ok maybe a few months), and it’s been pretty essential that I did as I have a place on the Meeting Needs running team at the Royal Parks Half Marathon taking place on Sunday 14th October.

This new challenge is not going to be an easy one. It’s been 8 years since I ran a half, and 2 years since I last did a 10k (which is only half the distance by the way).

I don’t really get a lot of time to go out and run. I juggle a lot of balls as an event professional running 2 businesses, but also I’m a busy mum to an energetic and determined 2 year old who demands a lot of her mummy’s time and well deserved love.

And, I only have 7 weeks to get myself run fit and ready for action! This morning was MY first step. The hardest part is done.

I’ve been out for the first run which will be followed up by 2 more runs this week. What’s most important when attempting a challenge such as this is breaking it down in smaller more manageable tasks and sections. This stops you getting overwhelmed by the enormity of the task in hand (I’m running a half marathon in 7 weeks) and keeps you motivated as you see the progress that you’ll be making week on week, which in turn spurs you on to do more.

This week it really doesn’t matter what distance I ran or how fast, what matters most is that I put on the Asics and got myself out there this morning, and the only thing I need to achieve this week is 2 more small runs. Easy(ish)!

In the weeks that follow I’ll set myself achievable targets in terms of distance and strength building so that I will be on track to crossing the line without the aid of a stretcher or medic. I’ll keep you updated on my progress here on and maybe even share a few top tips.

I’ll also be setting myself a daily challenge to support my training during #EventWell18, more news on this soon.

In the meantime check out Meeting Needs. The Event Industry’s registered charity and the one I’ll be raising vital funds for – Meeting Needs was founded by leading figures in the UK conference and events industry with an objective to raise funds for worthy causes relevant to our industry, but also to unite event professionals, whether they be competitors or suppliers, behind a common cause.
